Spirits of Pikeville Past

Pikeville’s own Effie Waller Smith, the daughter of freed slaves was the first female Black poet from Kentucky to have her work published.

Her patron was a local white women, Mary Elliot Flanery, who was a teacher, newspaper columnist and a wife of a county judge. She recognized the talent of Miss Effie and raised money to publish her poetry.
