The City of Pikeville Announces the Opening of “The Real McCoy” Trail

New trail opens to the public

PIKEVILLE, Ky. October 24, 2022) — The City of Pikeville today announced the launch of a new trail at Bob Amos Park. “The Real McCoy” trail will add four miles to the park, linking to the current hiking system already in the park.

“This is an exciting development for the City of Pikeville,” said Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter. “Not only are we expanding our park, but we are giving members of our community another new adventure that encourages them to get outside, practice healthy habits and spend time with one another.”

Newly appointed Director of Outdoor Recreation PJ Collins dug the trail by hand and blazed the way for future hikers. Collins plans to continue the expansion, adding more miles of park trails to Bob Amos.

“I am excited for ‘The Real McCoy’ to finally be open to the public and enjoyed by members of our community, as well as visitors to Pikeville,” said Director of Outdoor Recreation PJ Collins. “This trail has been a work in progress for some time now, and I know that seasoned hikers will enjoy the challenge!”

The trail will have two trailhead access points, both located at Bob Amos Park. The trail is deemed “strenuous” overall, with sections ranging from “easiest” to “highly strenuous.”

“The installation of ‘The Real McCoy Trail’ is a great addition to our park and existing trail system,” said Pikeville City Manager Phillip Elswick. “We have been working hard to make the Bob Amos Park a place for families and friends to enjoy all that Pikeville has to offer, and this trail only adds to the range of activities available at the park.”

While the majority of “The Real McCoy” trail is mountain bike-friendly, it is not fully suited for mountain bikers at this time. Additionally, the trail will eventually have camping sites, but they are not yet ready for campers. The City of Pikeville will inform the community when these updates are complete.

The City of Pikeville will host a public ribbon cutting for the Real McCoy Trail on Monday, October 24, 2022 at 4pm, weather permitting.

The ceremony will take place at trailhead located at the Overlook Events Center.
