Overlook Plaza under construction; pavers
available to honor loved ones, recognizer families
October 16, 2024, Pikeville, Kentucky – Construction is underway on the Pikeville 200 Plaza at the Cut-Thru Overlook next to the Events Center. The Plaza commemorates the city’s bicentennial with a time capsule and historical displays about the Cut-Thru Project and the Model Cities/Urban Renewal Program. Bench seating and landscaping with plants native to Pikeville create an open space concept that can be used as a photo location and wedding venue as well as a place to rest and relax while visiting the Cut-Thru Overlook.
Three sizes of concrete pavers create the base of the patio-type plaza: 6 inches by 6 inches, 12 inches by 6 inches, and 12 inches by 12 inches. These pavers are available for purchase at $35, $50, and $100 respectively, and can be engraved in memory or in honor of a family member or someone who had an impact on your life.
Peggy Justice, Team Leader for the Plaza Paver Project, said that pavers can be purchased at any time, “But if you want your engraved pavers to be installed by the December 28 dedication ceremony for the Plaza, they need to be purchased no later than December 1. It takes time to engrave and seal each paver, so to be confident that they can be installed by the dedication date, we need to know how many we need to produce at least three weeks out.”
Justice said that Signs of Appalachia, a local company owned by Scott and Melissa Hopkins, will engrave, back fill (with black paint), and seal each paver. “This is in keeping with the Pikeville 200 Executive Team’s commitment to including local vendors in as many ways as we can for all bicentennial activities and events.
