Pikeville, KY – December 26, 2024 – Due to unfavorable weather conditions
forecasted for this weekend, the City of Pikeville has made the decision to
postpone the highly anticipated Drone Show and Combined Fireworks Display
that was set to take place on Saturday, December 28th, at 6 PM at the Hambley
Athletic Complex.
The event was scheduled to celebrate two major milestones: the 100th
anniversary of Pikeville Medical Center and the 200th anniversary of Pikeville
itself. While we were excited to bring this special celebration to our community,
safety is our top priority, and the forecasted weather conditions are not conducive
to holding such a spectacular event.
We are currently working with our partners to determine a new date that will allow
us to safely host the event and provide our community with the experience it
deserves. We will make an official announcement regarding the rescheduled
event as soon as the new date is confirmed.
We thank the community for their understanding and support, and we look
forward to celebrating these historic milestones with you soon.
For more updates and information, please follow the City of Pikeville on social
media or visit www.pikevilleky.gov.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) recognized Pikeville Deputy City Manager Bradley Slone as the 2024 KLC City Employee of the Year. KLC and award sponsor Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP surprised Slone with the award at a Friday morning ceremony during the KLC Conference & Expo in Lexington. Slone’s dedication to his community and exceptional leadership during a time of transition were among the reasons a panel of judges selected him for the prestigious recognition. He served as interim city manager in 2023 while maintaining his responsibilities as deputy city manager.

City employees and elected officials praised Slone for ensuring a seamless transition. They described his leadership as compassionate, kind, and effective, with many noting that the city “did not miss a beat” during the period of change.

Since joining the City of Pikeville in 2017, Slone has been instrumental in the management and execution of several key projects. These include the recent construction of a new fire station, a pilot program for license plate reading video cameras, significant updates to the city’s website, and the development of a downtown economic incentive plan. Under his tenure, Pikeville has also become a Gigabit City, developed a pedestrian tunnel and bikeways project, and provided ADA-compliant playground equipment for disabled children.

For the complete article, courtesy of Mountain Top News, visit here.

Lead is a naturally occurring metal that may be harmful if inhaled or swallowed. Lead does not naturally occur in water, but may be leached into water from plumbing fixtures, lead based solder, and service lines.

The pipe that connects your household plumbing to the water main in the street is called a Service Line. Service Lines past the water meter are not part of the public water system and are the responsibility of the property owner.

What does a Lead Service Line look like?

Lead service lines are generally a dull gray color and are soft. You can identify them easily by carefully scratching with a key. If the pipe is made of lead, the area you scratched will turn a bright silver color. Do not use a knife or other sharp instrument and take care not to puncture a hole in the pipe.

Note: galvanized piping can also be dull gray in color. A strong magnet will typically cling to galvanized pipe, but will not cling to lead pipes. The best way to know what kind of plumbing and service lines you have in your home is to hire a licensed plumber.

If you have a lead service line, the City of Pikeville encourages you to replace your service line. The property owner is responsible for any portion of the service line after hte meter. The actual cost of the service line replacement depends on several factors including length of service line, where the service line is located, and the technique user to install the service line. Please contact a licensed plumber to discuss a lead service line replacement. It is always a good idea to get a quote in advance of hiring a professional plumber to do work in your home. The City of Pikeville cannot recommend plumbers.

Immediately after a lead service line replacement, you will need to flush the service line.

Because service lines, faucet fixtures, household pipes, and/or solder can contribute significantly to the lead and copper levels in tap water, we ask our customers to collect samples in their homes. These samples are collected on a tri-annual basis (by monitoring once every three years) at homes that are considered vulnerable based on when they were constructed, and the materials used. We do this monitoring according to the requirements of the Lead and Copper Rule by the EPA.
