DESCRIPTION:To help honor the dedicated men and women of law enforcement during National Police Week (May 15 – May 21) the City of Pikeville Police Department has partnered with Appalachian News Express\, Mountain Top Media and Pikeville City Tourism for a window decorating contest. Local businesses are invited to enter by decorating their windows in honor of our friends in law enforcement before Monday the 16th at 5pm and email: kevin@appwirelessarena.com to let us know you’d like to participate. The winning business will receive a $1\,000 advertising package courtesy of Appalachian News Express and a $1\,000 advertising gift certificate from Mountain Top Media to help build their business. The winning business will also have their windows cleaned the week after the event by members of Pikeville Police Department and Pikeville City Tourism. Entries must be located inside Pikeville City Limits and must be decorated by Monday\, May 16th at 5pm. Judging will take place Tuesday\, May 17th.

DESCRIPTION:This informative and inspiring children’s activity book is written by local authors Beverly May (Floyd County) and Eric Fields (Pike County) and illustrated by Yoko Nogami (Letcher County). The book explores the diverse people who have made their home in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky\, and features QR codes with music and stories from natives of the area. Listen to banjo music\, hear a Cherokee tale\, tour an exhibition coal mine\, listen to stories from families that immigrated to Eastern Kentucky or grew up in the African American coal camp of Lynch\, explore the history of the United Mine Workers\, and more! The book is also a coloring book\, with a closing page for children to illustrate a picture of their own family story.\nBeverly May and Eric Fields will visit the Pike County Public Library (Lee Ave) on May 26 at 5:30 to read and discuss the book. Children will receive a free copy they may color at the library\, and our genealogy librarian will have simple handouts for children (and adults!) to begin exploring their family history.\nThis program will be held at 5:30 on May 26 at the Pike County Public Library (Lee Avenue).
