DESCRIPTION:Pikeville\, KY – December 26\, 2024 – Due to unfavorable weather conditions\nforecasted for this weekend\, the City of Pikeville has made the decision to\npostpone the highly anticipated Drone Show and Combined Fireworks Display\nthat was set to take place on Saturday\, December 28th\, at 6 PM at the Hambley\nAthletic Complex. \nThe event was scheduled to celebrate two major milestones: the 100th\nanniversary of Pikeville Medical Center and the 200th anniversary of Pikeville\nitself. While we were excited to bring this special celebration to our community\,\nsafety is our top priority\, and the forecasted weather conditions are not conducive\nto holding such a spectacular event. \nWe are currently working with our partners to determine a new date that will allow\nus to safely host the event and provide our community with the experience it\ndeserves. SUMMARY:TIME CAPSULE SEALING CEREMONY
DESCRIPTION:FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT:\nKathy Atkins\, 606-794-5382\, kathy.atkins@pikevilleky.gov\nPikeville\, KY – The Pikeville 200 bicentennial celebration is continuing into 2026! The City of Pikeville\nwrapped up its bicentennial year on December 31\, 2024\, but there was one celebration left to\ncommemorate – the official sealing of the time capsule.\n“The weather did not cooperate with us in 2024\,” said Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter. “There were also\ndelays with constructing the plaza at the Overlook Events Center. But we finally have everything in place\nto celebrate!”\nThe ceremony will take place on Tuesday\, May 5\, at 11:00 am at the Overlook Events Center Plaza. The\nCity is partnering with the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution\, who will recognize\n201 Pike County Revolutionary War Patriots\, and Pikeville Elementary School\, whose students wrote\nletters to the future citizens of Pikeville.\nThe bicentennial time capsule will be placed in the center of the Pikeville 200 Plaza at the Overlook\nEvents Center. The plaza features historical markers that tell the story of the Model Cities Program\, which\nincludes the Pikeville Cut-Through\, that was spearheaded by Mayor William Hambley. The planning and\nconstruction of project spanned more than 20 years and was the most impactful and dramatic downtown\nrevitalization project in the nation.\nAmong the items that will be included in the capsule are letters to future citizens written by Pikeville\nElementary students\, some of whom will be in attendance to place the letters in the time capsule. Other\nitems to be placed in the time capsule are items that are popular today\, information about Pikeville\, items\nfrom the Pikeville Bicentennial celebration\, historical information about Pikeville\, books by local authors\,\netc.\n“The time capsule will be opened in 50 years in 2076 which will be America’s 300 th anniversary.” said\nMayor Jimmy Carter.\nCity officials will be in attendance\, and the public is invited to attend. There will be a reception following\nthe ceremony in the Overlook Events Center.
